Other Perspectives: Finding New Light in the Rain

It’s no secret that I love rain. I love how it sounds, how it refreshes and renews. Rain gives life. I And yes, I agree that that are often rainy days when we long for bright, warm sunshine to lighten our mood. I’m a great believer in the power of a blue sky to brighten our day and I am fortunate to live in a part of the world where I experience blue skies in abundance. Recently I heard someone describe rain in the most beautiful way, as “liquid sunshine”.

I sometimes lament how rain is often seen in a negative way, associated with dark clouds and dreariness. For many, rain is a symbol of gloom, oppressive dark skies, and cancelled plans. But what if we shifted our perspective? When I heard it described as liquid sunshine, the phrase caught my breath as it offered a new perception of rain and its value. As liquid sunshine, rain is no longer an inconvenience, but a gift, cleansing, nourishing, and full of quiet renewal.

It strikes me that this small shift in language holds a powerful lesson for how we view the challenges of life. Just as rain can be reimagined, so too can the experiences that weigh on us, like grief, anxiety, anger, or despair. Therapy offers a space where new meanings can be found. It’s not about denying pain or pretending struggles don’t exist. But it helps us see them differently. Much like looking at rain and seeing liquid sunshine, therapy supports us in finding new ways of relating to old patterns and experiences.

Rain is life-giving. It replenishes the earth, cleanses the air, and brings growth where once there was drought. The difficulties we face are real and tangible. But when we shift perspective, despair can become compassion, anger can lead to clarity, and sadness can deepen our capacity for connection. Therapy helps us find that shift, not by erasing or denying our lived trauma, but by helping us to recognise the sunlight carried within the rain.

The phrase “liquid sunshine” is more than poetic, it’s an invitation to us to look again at what we take for granted and discover a beauty we may have overlooked. Therapy works in the same way, gently encouraging us towards possibilities we didn’t realise were there. This is the spirit of Intinnua for me. I believe in helping clients uncover this kind of transformation; a new mind, a new spirit, a new way of being. Like rain, life’s struggles can be reframed, not as signs of darkness, but as liquid sunshine, quietly nourishing growth that is already on its way.

Mind yourself.
